Breanna Atlee Module#3

Here is my digital story of the camping trip I took with my kids this summer. Hopefully you all like it.https://youtu.be/SivC73snwRA

I am going to be totally honest, this was really challenging for me. I thought, "Oh no biggie. I'll upload, then download, then add my photos and text to a slideshow and away I go." WRONG!! (Now I will say, had I used a tablet device to take photos/videos and then used the same device to create the story it would have been a ton easier. The transfer from phone to laptop was a long wait. I'm still waiting on the videos. Navigating and trying to figure out iMovie, is still ongoing. SO I chose iPhoto.)
iPhoto was very easy to use and navigate for me. Importing the photos I wanted to use was very easy. Just select a folder of photos from my desktop (once I got them there from my Google Drive). Once uploaded to iPhoto I was able to create a new slideshow with all of the photos instantly in the show and choose from a variety of templates and backgrounds. I could simply click and drag to reorganize the photos. Adding text was also very easy, just click the text button and type. I did not like that I could not seem to adjust page layout and had to change themes to make the text boxes not covering some of the photos. This was not a huge deal however. There was a limited, but decent selection of music clips to add. I did not find a way to add my own dialogue. (I will look into it more to see if it is possible.)

I think that overall it is a great concept. I know that there are other options for making this work better for students, especially using iPads, and plan to explore those. This would definitely fall under the evaluating and creating levels of Bloom's. It also falls under ISTE creativity and innovation, and communication and collaboration.

Despite the difficulties I had, I truly do feel like this would be a great project or activity to use in my classroom for several of the things we study, (Mythology, Animal Adaptations, States and Regions...)

  1. Very nice! This is a great keepsake for you and a wonderful example to show students when you ask them to create digital stories in your classroom. Thanks for the honest feedback about the process- it's all about learning and relearning. Be happy that this was only a workshop- if you were in the full course I would be requiring you to narrate your story!
